Chapter Eight

When her trio returned, she was delivering a glass of water to Krys, who had developed hiccups that she was blaming on the baby.

Sallen handed the glass of water over and watched as Kel administered it to his mate while Nen rubbed her back. It was sweet.

Cale walked up to her and held out his hand. “As we are bound to your proximity for the next week, we will take Master Olmin up on his offer.”

“Wait. What? What do you mean bound to my proximity?”

Acker chuckled. “Didn’t they mention it? That is the reason that three could be tapped at once. Proving the link via proximity is the way to kill or cure the spell. Either you or we develop affection in the next week, or we don’t. If we do not, we go our separate ways. Regardless, your family will have no claim on you.”

“Does this happen often?” She gestured to all three of them. “The spell, I mean.”

Olmin answered from nearby. “No one has dared use it in nearly a century. The consequences are unpredictable.”

Sallen looked at him in astonishment. “You think?”

Acker pulled her into his arms. “Do not worry. We are not predictable either. We mixed with the magic very easily.”

She felt the heat off his body and his jaw next to her temple.

Olmin reached into his pocket and handed Cale something small. “The place is yours for as long as you need it.”

Cale nodded. “Thank you, Master Olmin. We shall retire there before the Kayetts get their second wind.”

Thomas walked up to them, and at Cale’s nod, he gathered them all in a tremendous hug. Sallen felt a jolt, and then, she opened her eyes. They were surrounded by a stately building, polished wood walls, and an aura of emptiness.

Thomas released them, and Cale smiled. “Well, I suppose that we should begin with furnishings.”

He grinned and flexed his fingers. A carpet shimmered to life on the floor and up the staircase. He stood with his hands pressed together, and the building filled with items around them. When he paused, there were couches and other furnishings. “Right. Shall we discuss a few matters?”

She looked around and nodded. “Yeah. This is going to be weird.”

Acker offered his arm. “You use that word a lot.”

“It remains appropriate.”

He grinned and escorted her to a seat near the fireplace. She gathered her hair from behind her and draped it over her shoulder, weaving it into a thick braid. Thomas took logs from next to the fireplace and broke them into kindling with his bare hands.

He set the fire up and flicked his fingers, sending a spark from his skin to the wood. The fire started as a curl of flame and turned into a bright crackle in under a minute.

She looked at them as they settled into chairs of their own. There was a chair to suit them all.

Cale leaned back and crossed his legs at the ankles. “So, you have seen us as we are and haven’t run screaming. That is a very good start.
